My 5 Top Essential Oils for Health

My Top 5 Essential Oils for Health and Wellness

I love essential oils! They have been a part of my life since 2003 and have been used for a variety of maladies, in products I make and for many other things around my home! They are a huge component in our family healthcare plan and I wouldn’t want to ever be without them.

It’s difficult to pinpoint my “Top 5″ but it’s helpful to start out with the most used single oils and then move into blends and other popular oils so you are not overwhelmed.

First I am going to tell you some basic information about essential oils, share what my *top 5” are and then share a few of the many things they are known for. Then I will tell you more about how and why I use them and how you can get your hands on them!

What Are Essential Oils

By definition, essential oils are natural, fragrant oils typically derived from plants or parts of plants through distillation. They are volatile and very concentrated. How concentrated, you ask? It takes 65 pounds of rose petals to product one 15 mil bottle of rose essential oil. That’s a lot of rose petals!!!

My Top 5 Essential Oils

Lavender is known for it’s calming properties and is probably one of the most well-known and used oils in the world. This means that there are many cheap imitations that are cut with some not-so-nice fillers like soybean oil or propylene glycol. Make sure you are buying pure oils. Lavender is wonderful for burns or for supporting the body during a fever. Applying a few drops to the bottoms of the feet during a fever can be very soothing to a child and help naturally bring down a fever. It’s also a great bug repellent!

Lemon is the perfect all-purpose oil. It’s a wonderful disinfectant and can be used to clean your entire house. Have you ever forgotten a load of laundry in the washer and it smells really bad? Put a few drops in and run the rinse cycle again. No more smell. Lemon can also lift the mood, help anxiety, relive stress and help increase focus.

Peppermint is wonderful for coughs and colds. It helps break down mucus in the respiratory system and kills bacteria in the lungs when diffused or steam inhaled. It’s also an effective headache reliever when used topically and inhaled. If you have joint or muscle pain, peppermint can help alleviate that pain as well. Spiders hate peppermint!

Melaleuca (Tea Tree Oil) was my first love! It’s the first essential oil I ever used. This powerhouse kills bacteria and viruses on surfaces and in the air. My favorite way to use Melaleuca is to spray it in the intake air vent and let it circulate through my vents and out into my home. Since it kills bacteria, it’s the perfect way to eliminate germs lurking around your home. I also use it in my homemade toothpaste as a germ killer.

Oregano is so powerful that I don’t need to use it often. I use it most when we have sore throats. It is a natural antibiotic and can combat the likes of strep and tonsillitis. It’s also very effective against parasites.

How I Use Essential Oils

I use them as part of my daily healthcare plan. Since I am my family’s primary healthcare provider I need to have an arsenal of remedies on hand. Essential oils are potent, effective, and don’t take up much space! I already have a ton of herbs that take up plenty of space!

I use essential oils diffused, in steam inhalation, topically, in salves and personal care products, in homemade cleaning products, and a very select few internally in small amounts. When we are sick I diffuse OnGuard or put in on our feet. If we need to focus, I use lemon or another blend specifically for clarity. I make my own Vicks Vapor Rub using essential oils for when we have a cough or congestion.

There really is no limit on the ways essential oils can be used to enhance your life and health. I find new ways to use them each and every day!

The Brand I Use

Let me be clear here. I am not a brand snob. I use products that I know to be pure and effective and that’s it. I decided to become a rep for doTERRA because I use a lot of essential oils in the products I make and sell and wanted to use a high quality oil. They really do make my product line super awesome! I like how doTERRA oils smell and how effective they are in doing what they are meant to do. There are a few other brands that I feel are very similar in quality and I have no problem using those oils or recommending them. This is just what I use and recommend the most because I have the most experience with this as being the best for me.

If you are interested in taking your healthcare to the next level and having pure essential oils in your home, feel free to comment on this post and I will email you or you can visit my doTERRA site.

*All these oil I’ve mentioned in my top 5 are part of a kit offered by doTERRA called the Family Physician Kit. This is the kit I started with when I first tried out doTERRA. It comes with the five oils mentioned about plus Frankincense, Breathe, DigestZen, OnGuard & Deep Blue. OnGuard is like Thieves oil if you are familiar with that. I am never without it! Breathe is what I use in my homemade vapor rub. Definitely essential!

Sarah, this is a great introduction to using essential oils! It’s enough info for anyone to get started.

I’m glad you mentioned synthetics and adulteration – it’s widespread throughout the aromatherapy industry, so it’s very important to be sure we’re buying pure botanical oils from sustainable sources. Sandalwood oil and frankincense oil are over harvested and in danger of going extinct, so it’s very important to source carefully!

Here’s another reference article on using essential oils safely and effectively. I think you’ll appreciate it!

Thanks for the info! I have just recently learned about essential oils and have bought lavender oil a few times and tried different brands. I have noticed the difference of potency in the cheaper brands, but they all say 100% pure lavender oil. Is that inaccurate? How can you tell if it is pure?
