My journey to natural started over 12 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child. I wanted a natural birth and researched my options for giving birth in the Army hospital where my husband and I were stationed in Germany. I was able to have a birth plan and fairly cooperative doctors who respected my wishes for a natural birth. I’ve run the gamut when it comes to birth from a hospital birth with doctors, to a hospital birth with midwives, to a free-standing birth center birth and then a home birth!
When I was pregnant with my second child in 2003, I was introduced to a semi-natural product company that educated me on the dangers of chemicals in personal care and cleaning products. I boxed up all my toxin-filled makeup and cleared out my laundry room, bathroom and kitchen of everything toxic. I replaced all of it with products that, at the time were better for myself and my family. I became a Natural Living Consultant teaching people how to do what I did and rid their homes of toxins. I studied to become a Certified Biblical Health Coach under Jordan Rubin of The Maker’s Diet fame and completed that in 2006.
I became the DIY queen over the years making my own laundry detergent, sugar scrubs, lip balms and bath salts. I even replaced commercial lotions with whipped body butter and started making my own soap recently. I even launched my own online store, 90210 Organics in 2007 retailing my favorite organic products lines and have since switched over to all my own hand-crafted products.
Since then, I’ve educated myself on the dangers of vaccines and learned how to make my own herbal medicine to keep my family healthy. I delved into the world of essential oils, cough and elderberry syrup, and herbal teas so that I could completely eliminate the need for over-the-counter or prescription drugs in our home.
Food has been a huge journey in itself for my family. We went from eating a Standard American Diet complete with low-fat and white everything to embracing a Real Food, raw milk drinking, sprouted grain thriving, butter and sourdough loving family. I wanted to share my love of real food with the world so I launched my Real Food Outlaws Blog at the end of 2010.
I learned how important gut health is for overall health and began to make my own probiotic-rich food and drinks with water kefir, kombucha and fermented foods. On any given day, my kitchen countertop is full of jars fermented multiple foods! I now teach others how to ferment foods so that they can benefit from all the flavors and benefits of them.
Through the years, I’ve had three miscarriages before and after changing my diet, and struggled with adrenal fatigue. Those two things are related because with adrenal fatigue comes hormonal imbalance. By following a daily health and wellness routine and getting on a specific nutritional program that includes herbal teas and tinctures, I am working through it.
I’ve learned that just because you eat a real food diet doesn’t mean you won’t have health problems crop up. You just have to know how to deal with those issues holistically as they come.
This is my journey in a nut shell and it’s just the beginning! I am excited about what 2014 has to bring! I am going to Florida this month to train as a Nutritional Response Therapist and am currently Enrolled in Vintage Remedies Master Herbalist Program to continue my studies.
