Did you know that the average American woman puts between 12 and 20 chemicals on her skin 365 days a year?
Do the ingredients in your personal care products and cosmetics concern you? Do you ever wonder how safe the things you put on your skin day in and day out really are?
Think about what your skincare routine involves each and every day: shampoo, soap, lotion, cosmetics — the list goes on.
Your skin is your largest organ, absorbing up to 60 percent of what you put on it. But even more shocking — and upsetting — is the fact that 80 percent of the ingredients that are used in daily personal care products have never been tested for safety. The laws governing the cosmetics industry date back to 1938 … and haven’t shifted since.
Gregg Renfrew, founder of Beautycounter, has set out to change that. As Renfrew overhauled the items in her home and on her kids, she realized that when it came to beauty products, what was available either didn’t work very well, or were a little too “crunchy”. The more she realized just what was in the products she was using on herself and her family, the more she felt that, as a consumer, she was being duped by the cosmetics industry.
Renfrew set out to speak to a chemist to understand what labels like “natural” and “safe” really mean. According to Renfrew, those labels mean nothing. Consider this: The European Union has banned 1,300 chemicals that are used as ingredients in beauty products. The US has only banned 11.
So what is the biggest offender? Lotion. “People are so concerned with avoiding pesticides in their food by eating organic, yet they slather chemical-ridden lotions all over their bodies,” Renfrew said.
Beautycounter has created a “NEVER” list of ingredients that they avoid at all costs, including animal fats (found in soaps, shaving products and lubricants); benzophenone, a possible human carcinogen found in sunscreen and nail polish; and formaldehyde, a human carcinogen found in shampoo and body wash and more.
One thing I really love about Beautycounter is that they are all about transparency. The products are chic and effective (all are vetted by natural beauty expert Christy Coleman) and they list EVERY ingredient on the label, which is not required by law (and many companies don’t disclose all ingredients). This means that you are getting exactly what the label says. No trade secrets or proprietary ingredients.
Renfrew is dedicated to the idea of empowering women through commerce. Beautycounter is not an MLM company (Multi-Level-Marketing). Their products are sold person-to-person through a direct sales model, much like eBay. “We believe our story is best told person to person. We want to build a company that’s financially successful, but we are a social mission. We took the best of that independent sales force model and married it with social media.”
ARE YOU READY TO MAKE A CHANGE TO SAFER SKIN CARE & MAKE-UP THAT ISN’T FULL OF TOXINS?
I SURE WAS! I swore I wouldn’t get into another business as my Nutrition Practice, Herbal Business, and Blog keep me very busy. As soon as I tried Beautycounter products, I was hooked! I have always been a “product junkie” and most of the “natural” makeup I’ve used just didn’t work as well as those toxin-filled name brands. I needed something else!
I love this quote from Hayley Ryczek from Health Starts in the Kitchen. “It doesn’t matter how perfectly natural or organic a product is, it must perform as well as (or better) than the conventional product you’ve been using.”
If you’re like me, you’ve seen a natural product that looks similar to what you’ve been used to using, but once you try it you realize it just isn’t the same. What a bummer!
Maybe you are a DIY’er and start trying to make your own products in hopes of coming out with a dream combination that finally fits the bill. Then after a while you feel like you never leave your kitchen!
It’s easier to just fall back on the products you were used to using from before…even if they are toxic. You’re just so sick of it all and wasting so much money on things that just don’t work. Been there, done that! I have a huge box of products to prove it!
What convinced me to take the plunged with Beautycounter is that their products is that they are equal in quality & performance to a high-end luxury brands BUT they don’t contain dangerous toxic chemicals.
Since their product line isn’t huge, you’re not going to be overwhelmed with options. They offer simple & effective products that you can trust.
Even though the products aren’t inexpensive, a little goes a long way. You are not going to be paying any more for them then you would for your current cosmetics and skincare.
MY BEAUTYCOUNTER BEAUTY ROUTINE:
I was skeptical about Beautycounter at first. I checked them out at EWG.org and that was a big factor in my decision. Their products are rated 1-3 on the safety scale. Since I have an obligation to become educated and research companies and products that YOU and my clients may benefit from, I began researching and trying out these products.
I took the plunge and to my delight, Beautycounter lives up to EVERYTHING you’re hearing from all of your favorite natural living bloggers (like me) I promise.
I’m seriously busy and don’t need a big skincare and cosmetic routine cluttering up my morning.
I absolutely fell in love with the Charcoal Cleansing Bar which is helping clear up some acne that I have lingering from Lyme’s bacteria that I’m busy kicking out of my body. I also use the Essentials Skincare Line and love that too!
It has really helped my skin heal.
In just a week of using these I was completely hooked. Simple, Effective & totally Safe!
For much of my life my skin was oily/acne-prone with large pores. Only with Beautycounter products have I FINALLY achieved balanced skin that is now considered normal and I don’t fear breakouts!
The next Beautycounter products I tried & fell in love with are the Touchup Skin Concealer Pen ,Tint Skin Foundation, and Mattifying Finishing Powder. This trio is fabulous for covering up blemishes and acne scars, as well as giving my skin a nice, natural look for the whole day.
There are so many more products that I use and love, but those can wait for another post!
