You may not know this about me, but detoxifying my personal care was the very first thing I did on my journey to natural. This was over ten years ago when I was in my early 20’s! I’ve never looked back. Since then, I’ve been educating people on the dangers of toxins in their personal care products and what they can do to minimize chemical exposure.

Think all the companies who say their products are “all natural” are? Think again! Some popular direct sales companies like Arbonne, Avon, Mary Kay, and Melaleuca may try, but they miss the mark. It’s called “Green Washing” and it’s a slick marketing ploy.

If you ARE looking for a direct sales company to join that is bath and body/personal care product oriented, I recommend Miessence and Ava Anderson Nontoxic. My friend Lacey is a true expert on this subject and has wonderful information on her blog (click here) for further reading.

We are on week 3 of the 31 Days to Detoxify Your Life challenge!

How are you doing so far?

In week 1 we discussed the toxins in our food system, and how to eliminate the common junk that is found in every kitchen, along with some delicious real food recipes.

In week 2 we talked all about how to remove toxic cleaners from our homes and how to replace them with easy, affordable, effective, and non toxic cleaners we can make our selves.

We have been discussing our progress and sharing more ideas in our support Facebook group, which you get access to when you buy the book, as well as following along with progress on our e-mail chain! There are definitely perks to buying the book in January!

This week we will discuss personal care.

In the personal care section of the book 31 Days to Detoxify Your Life, you will find a plethora of information about the most common toxins found in our every day personal care including shampoo, body wash, deoderant, lotions, tooth paste, cosmetics, and so much more.

By bombarding our body with toxins that disrupt hormones and endocrine function, are carcenogenic, and tetratogenic which are bad for the organs in our body that filter toxins like our kidneys, liver, skin, lungs, and bowels, we are causing a slow build up of junk in our body that we can’t get rid of fast enough.

By using more natural alternatives that we can make in our own home, we can remove these toxins from our life and allow our body to process toxins naturally, and slowly remove the built up toxins it has accumulated over the years.

In Chapter 3 we have some wonderful articles and recipes like:

  • The high price of personal care
  • A gentle detox routine including dry skin brushing and oil pulling
  • 9 Different natural hair care recipes for all different types of hair from poo-free, to natural shampoo and conditioners, and other wonderful hair treatments and hair styling products.
  • 12 Different Natural Skincare recipes from facial care to body care we have something for everyone to keep your skin silky smooth. Some of these recipes include Oil Cleansing Method, Blackhead Remover, Moisturizing Face Mask, Body Butters, Body Scrubs and more!
  • 5 Oral care recipes including toothpaste, mouth wash, and lip balm.
  • Other great recipes for things like detoxifying baths, Foaming Baby Soap, Foaming Hand Soap, Hand Sanitizer, Deodorant, DIY Perfume and more!

Detoxifying Herbal Bath

By Amanda – Natural Living Mamma

Today our bodies are bombarded by toxins more frequently than ever before. Our food is doused in pesticides, our meat is loaded with hormones and antibiotics, and our life is filled with plastic, air pollution, and other chemical constituents. No matter how “naturally” you live, toxins are a real part of everyday life.

This herbal detox bath will help open your pores and aid your body in naturally releasing toxins into the bath and out of your body. These bath salts can be used as a foot soak as well.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup epsom salts
  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • ¼ cup bentonite clay
  • ⅛ cup powdered ginger (organic)
  • 10 drops lemon essential oil

Directions

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl before adding it to the bath. This allows the essential oils to absorb into the salt and reduces the chance for skin sensitivity.
  2. Once all of the ingredients are blended, run a hot bath. The hotter the bath the more effective the detoxification effect, but be sure not to burn yourself.
  3. Add the bath salts and swirl it around the water until it is dissolved.
  4. Dim the lights in the bathroom, light some candles, read a good book, and take at least 20 minutes for yourself to allow your body to relax, release toxins, and detox. If you are sweating you are doing it right.

I would like to note that any detox bath may leave you feeling light headed. Keep water by the tub and take the bath while someone else is home, just in case you need a hand to get out of the tub.

This bath is perfect for someone who needs to release toxins, but it is also great for someone who is feeling under the weather, sick but unable to sweat or break into a fever, or any “cold” illness. This is not a remedy for someone who already has a fever, but if you have constant cold feet, cold body, stagnation, or pain this bath is for you.

Why these ingredients?

Epsom Salts: magnesium is a mineral that most Americans are deficient in because it is deficient in the soil our food is grown in. Magnesium is necessary for over 300 chemical processes in the body. Epsom salts in the bath are very versatile. In a hot bath Epsom salts will draw out toxins into the water, in a cool/warm bath the Epsom salts will absorb through the skin and add magnesium to the body.

Baking Soda aids in cellular detoxification. It can cause the skin to be itchy. If this is the case add 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar to bring the pH in the tub closer to normal.

Bentonite Clay is used to absorb toxins from your body and from the water. Most city water has chlorine and fluoride and the clay will absorb the toxins from the water so they don’t end up right back in your system.

Powdered ginger is wonderful for blood circulation, releasing congestion, encouraging lymphatic movement, and helps the pores open up. Opening your pores allows the toxins to escape from the system. Ginger is also wonderful to ease pain, especially arthritic pain, tension and headaches.

Lemon essential oil has many properties. In this blend it is used for lymphatic decongestant, diuretic, immune tonic, and pancreas stimulant. It is uplifting, energizing, and opens up the mind. Only use lemon essential oil at night when you will be out of the sun for 8-12 hours. It can sensitize the skin to the sun. Click here for the brand I use.

Hey Sarah – thanks for the shout out! Yeah, personal care was one of my first steps too, nine years ago – and it was through an experience with one of those greenwashing companies. I learned a lot about the marketing “tactics” out there – and then in contrast, through my continued research and journey, also what truthful, transparent, and ethical marketing looks like. There are SO many little tricks the “natural” and even “organic” products out there use to make people think the products are more natural than they are, it’s insane. We really have to read labels critically and dig, asking detailed questions to see if the answers we get actually make sense and line up with the marketing claims on the personal care (and nutritional supplement) products we consider for our families – and even better if you can speak to the formulators directly.
